Valerie Schulz's Module 3 Post

The essay that I have found, titled THE ROLE OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR KNOWLEDGE MOBILIZATION, DISSEMINATION, AND USE IN EDUCATION, at http://www.virtual.gmu.edu/EDIT895/knowlmob.html, argues that new technologies help to increase learning and education greatly. It also covers many different technologies and how they allow scientists and other similar participants who live in different areas of the country, and even different parts of the world, to communicate with each other.
The essay describes the efforts of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in creating learning communities in which individuals share their knowledge with "emerging information technologies." The NSF has also organized a site called Tapped In MUVE which aids in teacher professional development. Tapped In is described as a “text-based virtual conference center” that is similar to physical interaction, but it allows “thoughtful dialogues among geographically dispersed educators.” In short, the majority of the essay elaborates on how technology is changing education in the world today: it is no longer just a way to transfer information to one another, but it is a way for individuals to share and master their knowledge.

Kaitlyn,
I really enjoyed your powerpoint. It is very creative and informative. Also, your article summary was very interesting and hit on some good points. It sounded to me like she is coming from a point of view of a teacher and not just someone sitting on the outside looking in.

Traditional Educational Media Versus Emerging Technologies. By Signe Larson

Why Integrate Technology into the Curriculum?: The Reasons Are Many
by Edutopia Staff This article originally published on 3/16/2008
Summarized by Signe Larson

Schools around the world are starting to integrate technology into the curriculum because technology is becoming part of our everyday life. Reasearchers believe that it is important to integrate technology sooner rather than later because it will prepare students and give them the knowledge and training they need to survive in a "highly technological knowledge-based economy". Students refine their analysis and problem-solving skills, and are able to find, process, and synthesize information that they have found online.
Technology allows students to see things visually and do experiments electronically which shows graphic pictures that help a student have a better understanding of what they are researching because it is like getting one on one help with the teacher except in stead of just having one teacher you are getting helped by many.

Technology as a Tool to Support Instruction
Lynne Schrum

In this article Lynne Schrum gives us her personal stance on technology being used in the classroom. She supports technology when it is being used to enhance the students learning. Schrum talks about technology as a tool and how it benefits both the student and the teacher. For the students, technology is a way that they can not only learn but gain the experience by seeing. They are no longer sitting back just listening, they are participants. With technology, students are also able to connect with and gain knowledge from throughout the world.

Teachers also benefit from technology. They can use technology to enhance their student’s learning. Instead of just telling them about Mars, let them go do their own research and teach the class what they learned. This also allows for a “diversity of outcomes.” Because technology is a tool, teachers must learn how to use it. Schrum believes that teachers need to educate themselves on the tools they are using and make sure they have support from administrators. Technology needs to be planned and only the best tools should be used.

Traditional Educational Media Versus Emerging Technologies

Hey guys!
Basically, this article summarizes all of the wonderful benefits of the technological world, brought into a classroom. I actually used the same website as Kelly, because I found the article to be so true. I think that technology is very important, and I think that this article touches on all of the major aspects of what technology brings into the classroom. As a teacher, we will be exposed to many cutting edge programs that will enable us to further our students learning experiences. As students, if they have a computer at their desk while we are up speaking to them, they can research and find the topic we are teaching for that day and receive additional information and certain visual aids for the subject. Our teaching skills will be much more thorough through the use of visual aids such as PowerPoint and YouTube to help our students understand. I think that technology is becoming increasingly important, and as the times progress, technology will not only grow more incredible, it will become a vital need in schools.

Kristianna King - Power Point

After searching Google for the right article's that caught my eye, I came along a few. The first article was posted on a blog by David Gray from the UMass online blog. He struck on several points that truly stimulated my attention. In his post, he states that about 57% of the K-12 students have a ratio of 4:1 for every computer. As a college student, you can clearly see what an inconvenience this would be for us. Gray goes on to say that if our goals are to prepare students for the future as a college student; where technology is used more often than textbooks, does it not become the job of the teacher to encourage the use of software based education and not just a backpack full of books. He also strikes a new issue that we face as a nation by saying instead of making these children carry around a backpack filled with dozens of books, not only would it become less painstaking on the children but more environmentally friendly to allow the students to use notebook computers instead.

In an article entitled "Emerging Technologies" it is said that by allowing and encouraging access to the students of the wonderful world of technology, you are then expanding their access to information that could potentially expand their ideas of learning and could also create an interactive environment for the children. They also point out that by allowing students to access such technologies, the teachers could customize different resources to make it easier to conform to different student's specific needs. Although the technology is there for the teachers and students to access, there will always be obstacles whether the education is through the emerging technologies or through the traditional educational media.

Why integrate technology into the curriculum? The reasons are many. By Edutopia Staff

In this article on edutopia.org, the reasons for integrating technology into all aspects of education are strongly supported. Students need to have the opportunity to learn technological skills in order to compete globally, therefore, these skills need to be nurtured and developed in the schools. The most effective way to teach these skills to students is to immerse them in the technology. Edutopia discusses “four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback and connection to real-world experts”. By incorporating these concepts, students will be benefit from a cross-curricular approach in which they uses technology in all aspects of their education rather than just learning computer skills from a separate course.
By moving to a more integrated approach with technology, students will have the opportunity to develop problem solving skills and team work strategies. Challenging students in this way will engage them and keep their interest. There are benefits for teachers as well. By incorporating technology in the classroom, teachers will have tools to support diverse learners, and having students actively engaged will provide for easier classroom management.

Stephen Hardy Module 3 Assignment Summary

A Summary of
Why we need to teach 21st Century skill –and how to do it. (Cover Story) by Bob Regan

Bob Regan clearly deals with the concept of traditional education versus emerging technologies in his article Why we need to teach 21st Century skill –and how to do it. In a 2007 poll, administered for 21st Century Skills (21CS), finding revealed 80% of those polled said “…the kind of skills students need to learn today are different from what they needed 20 years ago.” Some of the skills needed for today according to 21CS are: thinking and problem solving, media literacy, communication, interpersonal, collaborative, and self-direction. (Many of these skills are the same skills discussed in chapter 2 of Instructional Technology and Media for Learning p.24-39) With the “context” of the way schools are operating changing these emerging technologies successfully complete what “textbooks only do part of”. Emerging technologies help us to successfully advance farther and get closer to our goals and the sources we use than ever before. This can be done through rich visuals and audio that supplement printed pages, while students use videos and other mediums of new technology in addition to plain text. It also provides help to students with learning disabilities. Through emerging technologies many students who may see “text as a hurdle to learning” may use “interactive digital experiences” to help them while the work through their text issues.

The article then breaks down some of the learning skills on a practical level. For instance media literacy enhances Language arts, problem-solving enhances the sciences, collaborative skills set the students up for success, and the impact of technology skills that the students are learning can positively impact the community. All of those skills are developed and sharpened by emerging media. The article closes stating that now portfolio based programs are possible for students and teachers. Mr. Regan states 20 years ago it would of crumbled under the logistics of large numbers of students but today is possible because of programs like Adobe Acrobat 9. These portfolios will help students become more successful in today’s world and market. It is just another way that emerging media is teaching students to thrive in the 21st Century.

Stephen,
Wow, that is a fairly large family, there are only two of us in mine. I would give an arm and a leg to be able to work from home while attending college. Lucky you!
